Work At Home
- Introduction on How Work From Home
Congratulations!
You
have made the decision to start, or are considering starting a home
based business so you can work at home. According to the 2000 U.S.
Census over
4 Million people reported that they work at home. Click here to see the
2000 Work
At Home
Census. The Internet was still relativly new to people in 2000 so home
based businesses were in large part non-Internet based. Today, most
people use the Internet on a daily basis and many, like you, realize
the opportunity to reach millions online without being a
massive corporation with a million dollar marketing budget. |
Creating
a home based business requires the same fundemental rules as starting a
traditional
business. You must choose a solid business model (see Work
At Home
Ideas) in a healthy industry,
plan and forecast, build a reliable partner base, and market like
crazy. But, there are differences too, some postive and others
negative. Let's take a look at the positives first.
Zero office space cost
Tax deduction for home office
Eliminates your commute
Save on gas
Less exposure to illness
Save on eating out costs
Eat healthier with home cooked food
Save on dry cleaning
Now for the pitfalls and how to overcome them:
Personal
Distractions (kids, spouse, TV, personal phone calls)
When
you are working from home your non-profesional life has direct access
to you and you to it. You must be aware of this and apply tremendous
discipline and the proper home
office
setup to avoid the following:
You are in the middle of writing copy for a new email promotion. You're
on a roll, when suddently there is a knock on your office door. The
door opens and it's your spouse. "Honey, can you take a quick minute
and look at this --FILL IN THE BLANK--." You get up and head over to
the kitchen to take a look. The house phone line begins to ring, since
you're right next to the phone you pick it up...it's Mom. You finish
telling Mom that all is well and hang up. You finish looking at --FILL
IN THE BLANK-- when you glance out the window into the backyard and see
water shooting up into the air. Rats, a broken sprinkler. You step out
into the yard and turn off the sprinklers. You walk back in the house
and head for your office, but the T.V. is on and late-breaking news
catches your attention. You watch. 1 hour and 23 minutes after you got
up to "take a quick minute and look at this --FILL IN THE
BLANK--", you sit back down at your desk.
Be sure to read Home
Office Setup to learn how to avoid personal
distractions.
Social
Isolation
If you live alone, or you're spouse works outside of the home you won't
get much face to face social interaction running your home based
business. By nature, humans are social creatures and we need to have
regular contact with other humans to maintain a healty state of mind.
Make it a point to set at least one outside the home lunch meeting,
either social or business related. Also, take up an outdoor activity
that you can participate in on a scheduled weekly basis. Be sure it's
an activity you can do with one or more people such as golf, jogging,
or strolls around the neighborhood or park. Use the time you save from
not having to commute to work and get outside and enjoy the company of
people. Follow this simple advice and you will not fall victim to work
at home isolation.
No Escape
From Work
Just as you need to apply discipline to stay focused on your work at
home business, it can take just as much will power to stop and take a
break. When you're an office worker, at some point each day, you leave
the office and return to your refuge from work, home. In the case of
the work at home entreprenuer, home and work can become blurred. If
you're not careful your work can slowly take over your entire home and
burn-out will soon follow. To avoid this, refer to Home
Office Setup
, follow a work schedule with start a start time and finish
time,
turn your phone and fax machine ringers off when you end your work day,
and take a walk around the block when you end your day to unwind and
arrive back home detached from work. |
